Deconstructing VR Training Course: Live Cohort
We’re building this course the way we learned to design for the future: by doing it live, making mistakes, and adjusting in real-time. We need you “at the table” for that.
1. Participation and Engagement
- Being Present (Live Attendance): This is a live, interactive build. We need your “eyes on the screen” and your voice at the table to make sure the lessons land correctly with your fellow students. We ask that you commit to attending every session live. If you know you’ll miss one, please let us know ahead of time so we can keep the group momentum going.
- Helping Shape the Future (Feedback): Because you are the first group to go through this course, your feedback is the most important part of the process. Completing assignments and feedback forms isn’t just “homework”—it’s the invaluable input we need to improve the course. Your input will directly influence how we teach this course in the future. When you see the polished, on-demand version of this course later, you’ll be able to see the “fingerprints” of your feedback in the final product.
- The Value Exchange: To say thank you for your time and active help during this live run of the course, we’re providing full access for free to the finished on-demand version of the course once it launches. To earn that “lifetime access,” we just ask that you actively participate in all of the live sessions and provide the requested feedback. If you aren’t able to participate, we’ll assume the course wasn’t a fit, and you won’t be enrolled in the final on-demand version.
2. Feedback and Communication
- Your Voice Matters: We really value your honest feedback. Since this is a pilot run, we’re looking for what works and what doesn’t. If something is confusing or if a lesson really clicks, please let us know. Your insights are what will help us bridge the gap for future students.
- Where to Post: To make sure I don’t miss anything, please use our private invite-only Discord server for questions and feedback. Keeping our conversations there allows everyone to learn from the answers. You will also have the option to ask questions in chat during Aleatha’s weekly live streams. For private or billing matters, feel free to use the email provided after successful registration.
- Response Times & Boundaries: We are fully committed to your success, but we also need to step away from the screen to keep other commitments, and to stay sharp and creative.
- Please don’t expect an immediate response.
- We will typically get back to everyone within 24 hours, except on weekends.
- Setting these “offline” times allows us to show up for our live sessions with the energy and focus you deserve.
3. How We Work Together
- Building a Healthy Studio Environment: In the world of design, we’re only as good as our community. Please keep all communication—whether it’s with the instructors, a guest speaker, or your fellow students—helpful and curious. Even when you disagree with a critique or a design choice, focus on the work and how to make it better.
- The Power of “We” (Collaboration): When I was working in traditional design, I (Aleatha) often felt like I had to know everything. Moving into future tech taught me that the best work happens when we collaborate.
Because this is the first run of this course, we are all ‘learning out loud.’ Don’t worry about having the perfect answer—just bring a positive attitude and a willingness to try.- Show Up for Your Team: If you’re participating in group work, remember you have a voice as well.
- Stay Open: Be willing to listen to ideas that feel “outside the box.”
- Contribute: Share your shortcuts and your “aha!” moments. We all move faster when we share what we’re learning.
4. Public Sharing
- Show the World Your Progress: We want you to be proud of what you’re building. You are highly encouraged to share your own work, experiments, and “aha!” moments on social media. This is a great way to connect with the larger design community and show your growth from 2D foundations into VR training design.
- Tag Us on LinkedIn: Tagging us on LinkedIn @Ninja Robot Studio LLC and using the hashtag #deconstructingvrtrainingdesign will help us find your work so we can celebrate your wins and cheer you on in the comments.
- What to Keep Private (The “Behind-the-Scenes”): While we want you to share your results, we ask that you keep the “how-to” private.
- Your Work Only: Please only post the designs and projects you’ve created yourself.
- No “Curriculum Spoilers”: Avoid sharing screenshots of our materials, specific templates, or downloadable resources. Think of it like a movie: show the poster and the trailer (your work), but don’t leak the script (the curriculum).
- Respect Your Peers: Never share another student’s work, feedback, or comments without their explicit, written permission.
5. Assignments and Deadlines
- Keeping the Momentum: To get the most out of this course, it’s important to complete the assignments as we go. These exercises are designed to stack on top of each other. If you fall behind, the live sessions will be much harder to follow. Please submit your work by the deadlines we’ve set to keep your progress moving forward.
- The Feedback Loop: As a part of the first run of the course, your “work” includes the feedback forms we’ll send out. This is a critical part of the first run. Your insights help us fix issues with the curriculum in real-time.
- Maintaining Eligibility: We know life can get busy. However, because we’re providing the final on-demand course as a thank-you for your help in this first run, we do require that all assignments and feedback forms be submitted on time. Consistent “no-shows” on assignments will result in losing free access to that final on-demand version.
6. Owning Your Growth
- Be the Architect of Your Learning: We’re here to provide the map and the tools, but you’re the one doing the building. To get the results you’re looking for, we encourage you to dive in headfirst. Don’t just watch the sessions—interact with them.
- Ask the “Early” Questions: In the world of new tech, there are no “basic” questions. If you’re stuck, speak up early. Whether it’s during a live session or in our Discord, seeking help is a sign of a professional, not a beginner.
- Beyond the Classroom: The goal isn’t just to finish the assignments; it’s to master a new way of designing. Take what we talk about and try to break it, stretch it, and apply it to your own projects. That’s where the real transformation happens.
7. Design First, Tools Second
- The Focus of This Course: We are here to learn UX design for VR Training, not the mechanics of the prototyping software itself. Our live sessions are dedicated to high-level strategy, spatial thinking, and the transition from 2D to 3D design—not “how-to” tutorials for the prototyping tools.
- Self-Paced Learning: If you’re new to the software, please set aside time to walk through basic tutorials before our first session. This ensures that when we meet live, we can spend our time on the “why” and the “how” of great design, rather than troubleshooting prototyping software.
8. Intellectual Property
- Respect the Craft: The frameworks, templates, and lessons provided here are the result of years of trial and error. These are for your personal use to help you grow. Please do not copy, plagiarize, or distribute the curriculum or your peers’ unique work.
- Your Company’s Secrets Stay Secret: We want you to apply what you learn to real-world problems, but please do not use sensitive or proprietary company data for your class assignments. Stick to personal side projects for your coursework.
- The Professional Benefit: Staying disciplined about what you share shows future employers and clients that you are a professional who deeply respects NDAs and company IP. Discretion is one of the most important traits of a high-level designer.
- Celebrating Your Wins: As your instructors, we love to brag about you. We may occasionally share screenshots of your coursework or your “aha!” moments on LinkedIn and YouTube to showcase the progress you’re making to the community.
- We will only share work created specifically for this course.
- By submitting your assignments and feedback, you agree to let us share your course projects and testimonials in our marketing and on social media.
- We will always credit you when we share your work, which also helps build your professional profile.
- We will only use your face or voice with your written consent.
9. Technology Use
- Your Tools of the Trade: To participate fully, you’ll need a reliable internet connection and access to the specific tools we’ll be using. Think of this as setting up your professional studio—having your gear ready allows you to focus on the design, not the troubleshooting.
- A Quest headset*
- Pen and paper, or a digital sketching app for storyboarding
- Basic crafting supplies (tape, paper, cardboard or cardstock, markers, etc.)
- Rapid VR prototyping tool of your choice, such as ShapesXR or Unity
- Figma or a similar UI design tool
- Video camera, recording, and editing software for assignments
- A way to capture video from your headset
*The experiences we’ll be studying in this course are free, but are only available on Quest headsets. Earlier versions are available on the Rift headset through the Oculus desktop application. Recordings will be available for those with non-Quest VR headset models.
- Troubleshooting & Momentum Tech glitches happen to the best of us, especially when working with emerging tech. However, because this is a fast-paced live course, it’s up to you to resolve technical issues promptly.
- Test Early: Try out your equipment before our live sessions start.
- Ask for Help: If you hit a wall, post in the Discord server. Your peers or instructors might have a quick fix, but don’t wait until the next class to speak up.
- Staying Current: Moving into emerging tech means working with software that updates frequently. Please ensure your apps and headsets are updated before class so we don’t spend our live “collaboration time” waiting for a download bar.
10. AI Usage
- AI as Inspiration, Not the Source: You are welcome to use AI tools for brainstorming, mood boards, or overcoming “blank page syndrome.” However, your final submissions must be your own work. We are here to see your unique creative approach and how you solve design problems.
- Developing Your “Internal Compass”: The goal of this course is to build your critical thinking skills and your understanding of design principles. You need to know the “why” behind every design choice so that, in the future, you can effectively oversee or double-check AI-generated work.
- If you don’t master the principles yourself, you won’t know when the AI is giving you a “wrong” or “weak” solution.
- Ask yourself, “Would I be able to do this work if I didn’t have access to AI?”
- Use this course to sharpen your own judgment first.
- Protecting the Course Data: To protect the integrity of our curriculum, please do not upload any course materials, private templates, or proprietary lesson content into AI models or LLMs. Feeding course data into AI tools can make private information public and dilute the value of the exclusive resources we’ve built for this cohort.
- Honesty in the Process: Submitting purely AI-generated designs as your own work will not be accepted. We value your personal “hand” in the design process. Misusing AI tools in a way that skips the actual learning process will result in losing your eligibility for the final on-demand course access.
11. Refund Policy
Due to the one-time-only live cohort’s purpose, we’ll provide a full refund within the first three weeks of the course, provided you have fully participated, given feedback on the course, and there are no material issues, such as fraudulent or malicious behavior on your part. Once you request a refund, you will lose access to all course materials and recordings, and you won’t be eligible to gain free access to the future on-demand version of the course.
After 3 weeks, if life happens and you’re no longer able to attend live, we’ll give you a prorated discount for the future on-demand course.
Agreement
By enrolling in this course, you agree to abide by this Code of Conduct. We look forward to your active participation and contributions to making this learning experience valuable for everyone involved.
